Origin:
Kohiki porcelain is a type of Japanese pottery that is known for its distinctive, rustic aesthetic. The term "Kohiki" refers to a specific glazing technique used in the creation of these pieces. The Kohiki porcelain began in the 13th century during the Goryeo (Korea)period as a transition between celadon and white porcelain. The ceramic technology of the Goryeo period could not match the white porcelain techniques of China. At that time, China's white porcelain had already achieved the world's most advanced technology, with firing techniques reaching temperatures above 1300 degrees Celsius. Therefore, they could only apply a layer of white clay over a gray body and then fire it at a low temperature to imitate Chinese white porcelain." Kohiki porcelain was introduced to Japan from Goryeo in the 15th and 16 centuries.
Technique:
Due to the shortage of glaze during that period, craftsmen applied a thin coating with engobe on the porcelain. This results in being able to see through the porcelain body, giving the piece a rustic and natural look. Gradually, people began to appreciate it’s calm, simple and unrefined appearance.
