Ash glaze is one of the oldest glazes used in ceramic manufacturing, spanning almost the entire history of human ceramic production. It is made by grinding the ash of burned plants and trees into a fine powder and applying it as a glaze, giving the ceramic a unique light grayish color and a hazy, ethereal beauty. It requires a high firing temperature of 1330 degrees Celsius, and the finished ceramic feels smooth and warm to the touch, elegant and enduring.
The combination of ash glaze and underglaze hand-painting adds even more ancient charm. As the name suggests, underglaze hand-painting involves painting on the ceramic body and then applying a glaze, followed by firing. This process seals the hand-painted designs under the glaze, achieving an effect of permanent colorfastness.
