This matching Gaiwan set—comprising one Gaiwan and one cup—was fired together in the same wood kiln, emerging as kindred pieces with near-identical character. Each is hand-thrown from Kaolin clay and fired unglazed, allowing the flame and ash to write their own story across the surface.

A vibrant emerald crystalline glaze has formed naturally on the lid from settled wood ash—a gift of the kiln’s alchemy. One side of the bowl is covered in fine ash-glaze crackle, while the opposite side remains unglazed, bearing only crimson fire marks like a watercolor painted by flame.

Remarkably, the interior of the bowl is smooth, clean, and free of ash or kiln sweat—a rare trait in wood-fired ware that makes this set exceptionally functional for tea. Together, they offer a striking balance of wild surface poetry and refined usability.
