Yaozhou ware and Longquan celadon were both outstanding representatives of celadon ceramics during the Northern Song dynasty. Yaozhou kilns originated in the north; unlike the southern Longquan kilns, they placed greater emphasis on ceramic decoration. Their glaze color is predominantly "olive green," while Longquan celadon is known for "plum green."
The carving on this plate is sharp and vigorous, with a strong three-dimensional effect. The carved scene depicts either dragons or phoenixes—both classic motifs in Chinese mythology. Dragons symbolize supreme power, authority, and imperial might, while phoenixes represent nobility, grace, and empressly virtue. In Chinese culture, these mythical creatures are deeply associated with prosperity, protection, and celestial order. Peonies, known as the "king of flowers," are often paired with these motifs to further emphasize wealth, honor, and flourishing fortune. The combination reflects a timeless aesthetic that has been treasured across generations in Chinese art and decorative traditions.
The plate has a diameter of 20 cm and can be used as a teapot drip tray, a serving plate, a fruit or snack dish, or as a decorative display piece.
