Yaozhou ware and Longquan celadon were both outstanding representatives of celadon ceramics during the Northern Song dynasty. Yaozhou kilns originated in the north; unlike the southern Longquan kilns, they placed greater emphasis on ceramic decoration. Their glaze color is predominantly "olive green," while Longquan celadon is known for "plum green."
The carving on this plate is sharp and vigorous, with a strong three-dimensional effect. The carved scene depicts "Nine Phoenixes and Peonies" , a common motif in Chinese art. The nine phoenixes symbolize supreme power and nobility. The peony, known as the "king of flowers" in China, represents wealth and prosperity. Throughout successive dynasties in ancient China, the dragon represented the emperor, while the phoenix represented the empress.
The plate has a diameter of 24 cm and can be used as a teapot drip tray, a serving plate, a fruit or snack dish, or as a decorative display piece.
