Traditional Kohiki Slip · Hand-Painted Classical Chinese Landscape · Fine Brushwork
These gaiwan and teacup are crafted using the Kohiki technique—a ceramic method that originated in Korea's Buncheong tradition and was later refined by Japanese potters, particularly in the Karatsu and Hagi regions . The term "Kohiki" means "powder-pulled," referring to the application of a white slip (liquid clay) over a darker clay body. This slip creates a soft, powdery surface that serves as an ideal canvas for painting, similar to the texture of handmade paper in Chinese calligraphy.
The exterior is entirely hand-painted with the classical Chinese landscape "A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains”, originally painted by Wang Ximeng of the Northern Song dynasty (1096–1119). This iconic masterpiece is considered one of the greatest works of Chinese blue-green landscape painting.
The brushwork is fine and detailed—not bold or sketchy, but precise, with careful attention to texture strokes that give volume and texture to the mountains. The painter uses a range of mineral blue and green pigments applied over the white Kohiki slip, with darker accents defining rock faces and lighter washes suggesting atmospheric distance.
