As the foremost of the Five Great Kilns of the Northern Song Dynasty, Ru ware or Ruyao is renowned worldwide for its sky-blue glaze, reminiscent of the sky after rain, reaching the aesthetic pinnacle of monochrome glazes in Chinese porcelain history. This Ru ware sky-blue glaze vase employs traditional Ru kiln firing techniques, featuring cicada-wing crackle patterns on the surface and a five-point nail-mark firing technique on the base.
The plum vase, a classic form of ancient Chinese decorative vases, is characterized by a small mouth, short neck, full shoulders, and a slender waist, resembling the graceful figure of a youthful woman.
Why is it called a plum vase?
It derives its name from the fact that its small opening is only suitable for holding plum branches. Plum vases first appeared in the Tang Dynasty and gained popularity during the Song Dynasty. The application of Ru ware techniques to plum vases during the Song Dynasty elevated the minimalist aesthetic of monochrome glazes to the pinnacle of artistic achievement.
