What is tea pet?

A tea pet is a small ceramic figure kept on the tea table during Gongfu tea sessions. Unlike teaware that directly participates in brewing, a tea pet is more of a ornament or a companion—present for the ritual, not for function.

This tea pet is glazed in Ru ware sky-blue celadon, following the formula and firing method of the legendary Song dynasty kilns. Ru ware, produced for only approximately 20 years in the late Northern Song period (1086–1125), is the foremost of China's Five Great Kilns.

The glaze on this tea pet is translucent, soft blue-green, with a subtle matte sheen. Under different lights, it shifts between pale celadon and a slightly deeper sky tone. The surface may show very fine crackle lines, characteristic of Ru ware, which will slowly stain with tea over time.

The sculpture is inspired by Tang dynasty horse figurines , one of the most celebrated forms in Chinese ceramic history. Tang horses (618–907 AD) are known for:

Full, rounded bodies – suggesting strong, well-fed imperial mounts

Short, powerful legs – planted firmly, conveying stability

Arched necks and alert heads – a sense of contained energy

Saddles and ornamental tack – indicating status and ceremony

A small Tang horse in Ru sky-blue glaze—plump, stable, compact. Not a toy, but tea table company.

Chinese tea table companion figure with unglazed underside for absorbing poured tea rinse
