This gaiwan is a gentle embodiment of soda-firing artistry. At high temperatures inside the kiln, vaporized soda reacts with metal oxides in the clay body, creating glaze textures reminiscent of mist after rain: pink-purple hues as fog, blue-green streaks as clouds, and creamy whites like ink-washed rice paper. Even the natural crackle glaze bears delicate lines left by time, breathing with warmth.

This soda-fired gaiwan is safe for boiling water (100°C / 212°F). During the soda-firing process, when the kiln reaches around 1200°C (2192°F), a soda solution is sprayed into the kiln. The soda vapor reacts with the clay and ash at high temperatures, creating the unique natural surface effects that make each piece one of a kind.
