Jianshui purple clay, celebrated as "five-colored clay," has been crafted in Yunnan's Jianshui County since the Qing Dynasty in the 19th century. It is honored as one of China's "Four Great Famous Clays." Sourced from the iron-rich soils of Wucai Mountain, this clay yields ceramics of remarkable density and strength, with a distinct metallic sheen and a clear, resonant ring when gently struck. Using a traditional unglazed polishing method, each piece is carefully ground and polished to a luminous, mirror-like finish, embodying the qualities praised as “hard as iron, clear as water, smooth as jade, and resonant as a stone chime.”

This teacup is shaped in the "Vat" form—a classic Chinese design known for its stable base and gently rounded walls that offer both visual solidity and comfortable handling. The generous capacity and open form allow tea to cool naturally and aromas to unfold fully. Fired in a wood kiln, the surface retains subtle traces of flame and ash, enhancing its natural luster while preserving the honest texture of the clay.

Jianshui purple clay is fired without glaze, and its unique single-pore structure helps concentrate and sustain the aroma of tea, making it particularly suited for fermented and semi-fermented varieties such as Oolong, black tea, Pu-erh, and Liubao tea. To nurture the cup’s character over time, we recommend dedicating it to one type of tea. Should you wish to change tea varieties, simply soak the cup in warm water with a small amount of baking soda for 30 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
