Kohiki, meaning "powder-pulled," is a ceramic technique that originated in Korea's Buncheong tradition and was later adopted and refined by Japanese potters, particularly in the Karatsu and Hagi regions . A white slip (liquid clay) is applied over a darker clay body, creating a soft, powdery surface that contrasts with the raw clay beneath. On this teapot, the Kohiki slip serves as the canvas for the kiln's coloration.
The teapot is fired in a soda wood-kiln at approximately 1300°C. During the firing, a solution of soda ash (sodium carbonate) is sprayed into the kiln . The soda vaporizes and reacts with the silica in the Kohiki slip and clay body, creating a natural glassy glaze on the surface. Wood ash from the pine fuel also deposits on the pot, contributing to the color development.
The interaction between the soda vapor, the Kohiki slip, and the kiln atmosphere produces the soft blue and pink coloration. The blue comes from mineral reactions within the slip; the pink appears where the slip is thinner and the underlying darker clay interacts with the soda and flame. The colors are not uniform—they shift and blend across the surface, with lighter passages where the kiln atmosphere was more reducing and deeper tones where oxidation dominated.
No two pieces from the same kiln load have the same color distribution. This teapot's specific pattern is unique to its position in the kiln and the path of the flame during its firing.
On the interior surface, a single kiln sweat is present. This is a natural by product of soda and wood firing; it is firmly attached to the wall, inert, and does not affect tea flavor or safety.
