This gaiwan is crafted from coarse clay, an unrefined ceramic material that retains its natural mineral particles and granular texture. Unlike smooth porcelain or refined stoneware, coarse clay shows visible grit and variation—small specks of iron, uneven surfaces, and a dry, matte quality that feels distinctly earthy in the hand.

The clay is hand-thrown on a potter's wheel. The throwing process leaves subtle ridges and undulations in the walls, marks of the maker that are preserved rather than smoothed away. These irregularities are part of the aesthetic, not corrections to be made.

The gaiwan is naked-fired in a traditional wood kiln—no glaze is applied before firing. During the long, high-temperature firing (typically exceeding 1300°C), pine ash from the burning wood drifts through the kiln chamber and settles on the exposed clay surface.

This surface embodies wabi-sabi aesthetic that finds beauty in imperfection, impermanence, and the unpolished.

Across the lid and the bowl exterior, a hand-painted classical Chinese poem--将进酒(Bring in the Wine). Written by Li Bai, a famous poet of the Tang Dynasty, this poem is full of bold, unrestrained passion.

The poet drinks with friends at a feast and pours out his thoughts over wine. He sighs that human life is short while time flows endlessly, yet advises people to treasure life and enjoy drinking instead of sorrowing over trivial troubles. Though he admits his own talent deserves good fortune and wealth, wealth and glory are fleeting things. He urges the host to spare no expense on fine wine and feast without limit, ready to sell precious belongings for more wine to drink and release his unyielding ambition and free spirit hidden inside.
