Wood firing is an ancient ceramic firing technique that uses pine wood as the primary fuel. During the firing process, the porcelain body is carefully protected, allowing the flame and wood ash to interact in a controlled way so the glaze surface remains harmonious and balanced. The essence of wood-fired ceramics lies in the natural fusion of ash, flame, and clay, creating subtle variations that can never be exactly replicated.

Unlike modern electric or gas kilns, wood firing requires significantly more time, labor, and resources. Each piece is truly one of a kind. The resulting works appear simple and understated at first glance, yet reveal rich layers of color and expressive depth upon closer inspection.

As the pine wood burns, ash and flame circulate freely inside the kiln, naturally settling onto the ceramic surface. When temperatures exceed 1200°C, the wood ash begins to melt, and the iron content within the ash and clay reacts to form a natural ash glaze, producing organic color variations. This process creates what is known as a “natural ash glaze.”

Natural ash glaze may appear subtle rather than glossy or decorative, but its quiet warmth, depth, and rustic character grow more captivating over time. This gentle, earthy beauty is precisely what draws wood-fired ceramic artists to devote immense effort to this traditional technique.
