The Qin Quan teapot is an iconic classic Zisha shape, modelled after the weight of ancient Qin-dynasty steelyard. Its knob is also designed to mimic the cord loop for hanging the weight. The tall body tapers gently toward the top with smooth, flowing lines. This piece features refined modifications to the traditional form: it has a long, straight spout paired with an elegant, slim handle. Balancing the steady, solid presence of the classic Qin Quan shape, it carries a delicate softness for a distinctive aesthetic. It pours swiftly and cleanly, and feels light and graceful in hand.

Crafted from Red Jiangpo Clay, this teapot presents great challenges for artisans. The straight spout and tall cylindrical body are tricky to form. Red Jiangpo clay has a high firing shrinkage rate of around 15%. Due to this large shrinkage, the straight structure is prone to warping or bending under high heat, which demands superior craftsmanship.

There is a simple way to identify genuine Zisha clay. When pure Zisha is rinsed with hot water, the granular sand texture becomes more prominent on heated areas. Its colour visibly darkens, creating an obvious contrast between heated and cool sections, and a subtle glossy sheen emerges quickly on the surface. Ordinary pottery clay or blended filler materials will not show such changes even after long-term seasoning. Many machine-molded or hand-pulled teapots are made from these inferior materials.

Teapot selection should match your tea variety, based on how the tea leaves expand and infuse. Round teapots work well for most teas. Curved inner walls encourage smooth water circulation, letting water interact fully with leaves to unlock rich tea aroma. This tall Qin Quan teapot is ideal for black tea and finely broken teas. Black tea is fully fermented; moderate steeping inside this deep, tall vessel delivers rich, mellow, layered flavour. By contrast, flat teapots suit green tea and large-leaf raw tea. Green tea is unfermented and should not be steeped for long. Flat teapots pour quickly, preserving the bright, fresh liquor and balanced flavour, aroma and colour.

Zisha teapots thrive with regular use. Frequent brewing brings out the natural luster and character of the clay, creating a harmonious cycle: the pot elevates tea, and the tea seasons the pot. Seasoning your Zisha vessel is also a calming, mindful ritual of connection between you and your teaware.

Traditional Zisha round vessel tea theory, curved interior helps tea leaves release aroma fully
