In the refined practice of Gongfu tea ceremony, the Gai Zhi—also known as a lid holder or lid rest—serves a quiet but essential role. This small ceramic piece is designed to hold the lid of a gaiwan (lidded bowl) or teapot when the vessel is open during brewing . By lifting the lid off the tea table, it maintains cleanliness and prevents moisture stains on the tea mat, while adding a subtle decorative element to the tea setting.

This lid holder is crafted from original Yixing Zhuni clay, takes the shape of a rectangular pillar—a stable, upright form with four flat sides. Each of the four sides is carved with the ancient Taotie motif, one of the most iconic decorative forms in Chinese bronze tradition. 

Over the Zhuni body, the exterior is coated with Minguo green slip, a decorative clay layer that provides a distinctive pale green-grey surface .

Beyond its practical role, this piece also serves as a tea pet —a small ceramic companion kept on the tea tray for enjoyment during tea sessions.
